Dun Laoghaire Rates Well In Litter Survey

Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council has welcomed an improved ranking in Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL) survey, where Dún Laoghaire town has moved from a ranking of 24th in 2008 to 16th of the 53 towns/cities surveyed in Ireland in 2010, and is considered 'clean to European norms'.

Almost three-quarters of Irish towns are now deemed clean to European norms, according to IBAL’s recent survey results, and 70% of sites in Dún Laoghaire were given the designation of 'Grade A'. These sites were not only free from litter, but very well presented and maintained according to IBAL. Dún Laoghaire Ferry Terminal was given particular mention as creating a 'wonderful first impression for visitors', as was a laneway in the town centre which was highlighted as maintaining a high standard of cleanliness. Grass and plantings, signage, bins, and public seating were also pointed out as contributing to the overall positive impression created by the town.

An Cathaoirleach, Cllr Lettie McCarthy applauded the local authority and business community for their ongoing efforts to improve the appearance of Dún Laoghaire town. "Everyone must play their part in keeping our towns and villages clean and litter-free, and clearly the efforts of the Council, residents and business community have paid off with Dún Laoghaire town improving its ranking year on year."

In IBAL’s view, a clean Ireland is critical to enhancing our international reputation. "This continuing improvement in a time of cutbacks shows what we can do in spite of smaller budgets,” comments Tom Cavanagh, Chairman of IBAL. “The majority of towns have achieved a standard of cleanliness which enhances their appeal as tourist and investment destinations. Furthermore, a well presented town improves the lifestyle and uplifts the morale of its citizens."

In 2009, the Council introduced a major change to its street cleansing programme, whereby all streets in the County are cleaned to a new schedule available for the public to view on http://www.dlrcoco.ie/ (opens in a new window). Road sweepers visit most main traffic routes every week or fortnight, and residential areas every month.
